At Lowe & Fletcher, we have always believed in the power of innovation to drive positive change. That is why we are proud to claim to be the first business in Europe to have adopted Trivalent chrome coating within a fully automated, large-scale plant.  The decision to take such a step over 20 years ago was driven by this safer, more environmentally friendly alternative to hexavalent finishing.

As we pave the way towards a more sustainable future, we are excited to share how that transition aligns with our values and benefits our customers and the planet.

Embracing Environmental Responsibility

Hexavalent chrome is the traditional method of chromium plating for decorative and functional finishes. It achieves this by submerging substrates into a bath of chromium trioxide (CrO3) and sulfuric acid (SO4). However, this type of chromium plating produces several byproducts which are considered hazardous waste (such as lead chromates and barium sulphate). Hex-chrome itself is a carcinogen and heavily regulated. Trivalent plating is a reduced state of hexavalent chrome which is much less toxic, by using chromium chloride or sulphate as its main ingredient. Tri-chrome, although developed differently, still boasts the same traits as hex-chrome such as durability and variety. Due to the extensive cost to convert from hex-chrome to tri-chrome, many companies have refrained from making the switch.

A Safer Alternative for Everyone

Trivalent chromate plating offers a safer working environment for our employees and a healthier outcome for our planet. By eliminating the use of hexavalent chrome, we mitigate the risk of exposure to hazardous chemicals, ensuring the well-being of both our team and the communities we serve. This commitment to safety underscores our dedication to excellence in every aspect of our operations.

Pioneering Sustainability

By 2026, the European Union will enforce a complete ban on the use of hexavalent finishing due to its severe health risks and the UK is likely to be forced to follow suit in the near future. With health specialists stating that Hexavalent is a significant cause of cancer, this ban marks a significant milestone in the pursuit of sustainability. As industry leaders, we are proud to have been ahead of the curve, having implemented Trivalent chrome plating across our main, high volume product line. By embracing this innovative technology, we anticipated regulatory standards but also set a new standard for responsible manufacturing practices, which, years later, is yet to be fully adopted across many businesses. Expert Surface finishing solutions and reliable UK chrome plating services are not the only reasons why Lowe & Fletcher has a history of success, but rather because of our ability to constantly tackle and overcome challenges.
